"The elevator out of control felt like a roller coaster"

According to Wei's daughter, around 8:30 PM on February 18, her father went upstairs to get something, and the "elevator out of control felt like a roller coaster, suddenly plummeting from the 17th floor to the basement, and then rushing to the 33rd floor."

Wei suffered a severe head injury and bled, unfortunately dying on the spot.

The building where the incident occurred is 33 stories high, with a total of 3 elevators, among which the involved elevator is the innermost freight elevator, which has now been suspended from use. On February 19, the property management posted a notice stating, "Due to damaged parts of the elevator in Building 4, No. 3, maintenance is required for the parts, and for safety reasons, the elevator is currently stopped, with an expected recovery time of about 7 days."━━━━━

Property management: Maintenance was conducted in February this year.

On the 21st, a reporter from upstream news learned from the Kunming Market Supervision Administration that the market supervision and emergency departments have launched an investigation into the incident, and multiple elevators in the community have been maintained promptly.

By scanning the QR code placed inside the elevator No. 2 in Building 4 for the "Yunnan Province Market Supervision Elevator Social Co-Governance Platform," it shows that the elevator was put into use on January 11, 2014, the last maintenance time is "not available," and the last inspection date is October 15, 2023. Elevator No. 1 shows that the last inspection time was October 15, 2023, and the last maintenance time was September 20, 2024.

On the afternoon of the 21st, the reporter called the community property service center. The staff stated that the community elevators undergo irregular maintenance every month, and relevant daily records are kept. The staff also mentioned, "The elevator underwent maintenance in February this year."

A staff member from the Special Equipment Safety Supervision Office of the Kunming Market Supervision Administration responded that the incident is currently under investigation. "On the night of the incident, all elevators in the community underwent emergency maintenance, and the manufacturer also cooperated on-site."

There have been multiple similar elevator top-out incidents.

In November 2024, an incident occurred in a community in Xingyi City, Guizhou Province, where an elevator rushed from the 11th floor to the 28th floor, resulting in multiple fractures in a 7-year-old boy.

In May 2021, an elevator in a community in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, accelerated from the 1st floor to the 30th floor, resulting in one death.

In July 2020, an elevator malfunction occurred in a community in Luohu, Shenzhen, Guangdong, where the elevator suddenly lost speed and rushed to the top in two to three seconds. The owner hit the top light fixture of the elevator and then fell to the ground.

━━━━━

Why is the injury from an elevator top-out so severe? It's more terrifying than falling.

When an elevator tops out, it rises rapidly, causing people to be in a state of overload. At the moment of the elevator topping out, due to inertia, a person continues to rise, and their head may hit the top of the elevator, after which they will fall heavily to the floor, with serious consequences.

Compared to falling, topping out is more terrifying not because it causes greater harm to the body, but due to the differences in protective devices between the two.

When an elevator descends abnormally, at least 3 safety lines must be breached to completely enter free fall.

Traction steel wire rope: Each elevator is equipped with 4 to 6 steel wire ropes to suspend the elevator, and each rope is sufficient to hold the entire cabin.

Speed limiter + safety clamp: Once the elevator speed exceeds 15% of the rated value, the speed limiter will immediately brake. If it does not stop, the safety clamp device will grip the guide rail, forcibly stopping the elevator.

Buffer: If the elevator does not stop before reaching the bottom, there is a spring-like buffer to cushion the impact.

In contrast, the top-out protection devices of most elevators in the country are somewhat crude, with only one brake controlling the speed. If this brake fails, the elevator can only speed uncontrollably.

What to do in an elevator emergency? Learn the self-rescue rules.

How to save yourself when the elevator rushes to the top or falls?

If the elevator is falling or rushing to the top, regardless of how many floors, quickly press all the floor buttons in the elevator. Once the emergency power is activated, the elevator will stop.

If there is a handle in the elevator, hold the handle tightly to stabilize your position and prevent injury from an unstable center of gravity.

When the elevator is falling, adopt a position with your back and head pressed against the elevator wall, forming a straight line, while bending your knees and raising your heels, holding onto the handrail or elevator wall, which can help reduce the impact.

What to do if the elevator suddenly stops?

Immediately use the alarm bell, intercom, or phone in the elevator to contact management personnel, or dial the rescue number indicated in the elevator and call 119 for help, and wait for rescue.

If the alarm is ineffective, you can intermittently call for help to attract others' attention. During the waiting process for rescue, passengers should not attempt to climb out of the elevator, force open the door, or try to enter or exit the cabin, as this may lead to falling into the shaft.

How to determine if an elevator is qualified?

Do you know how to identify if an elevator is qualified? Remember these four signs!

Special equipment usage sign

The special equipment usage sign must be posted in a prominent position in the elevator. If the usage date is within the "next inspection date" range, then the elevator is considered to have passed inspection.

Elevator safety insurance sign

According to Article 17 of the Special Equipment Safety Law of the People's Republic of China, the state encourages the purchase of special equipment safety liability insurance so that passengers can receive adequate compensation in the event of an accident while using the elevator.

Special Equipment Use Registration Certificate

By scanning the QR code in the "Special Equipment Use Mark," one can obtain the special equipment use registration certificate for the elevator and learn some basic information about the elevator.

Elevator Maintenance Unit Information

The maintenance unit of the elevator shall be responsible for the safety performance of the elevators it maintains; upon receiving a fault notification, it shall immediately rush to the site and take necessary emergency rescue measures.

National Emergency Broadcast Reminder

If you find during the elevator ride

that the elevator is making abnormal noises or shaking

or if the elevator door does not close properly

you should immediately stop using it

and promptly report to the property management

or relevant management departments.
