In daily life, many people encounter individuals who casually throw cigarette butts, fruit peels, and other household waste in elevators. Some even use passenger elevators to transport construction materials, such as broken bricks and cement. Little do they know, garbage is one of the hidden dangers that can cause elevators to "break down"; even a small piece of plastic film can lead to a "breakdown."

On November 25, 2023, an employee elevator in a shopping mall in Shenzhen suddenly malfunctioned, trapping a cleaning staff member. After being trapped for more than ten minutes, maintenance personnel opened the malfunctioning elevator door, allowing the cleaning staff member to exit safely.

Afterwards, based on surveillance footage and feedback from the maintenance unit, relevant parties initially analyzed that the cause of the elevator entrapment was due to foreign objects blocking the elevator door knife and door roller, causing a collision that deformed the door lock and prevented the door from opening. Surprisingly, the blocking object was a piece of very strong plastic film!

In addition to plastic film, construction and renovation materials such as cement, sand and gravel, cigarette butts, and longan can also cause elevator malfunctions.

Garbage is not only unsanitary for elevators, but it can also affect their operation and safety. Professionals indicate that elevators must automatically check whether the doors are properly closed before starting; if the doors are not completely closed, even by a small margin, the elevator will not start.
