Before emergency crews arrived, Liu's roommate and two other friends opened the elevator door from the hall and rescued the trapped man, when the water had flooded Liu's neck and he had to stand on the railing of the elevator. Fortunately, none of the three people trapped were injured.

On the same day, Omaha was hit by a storm. Tony Lu, who lives in the suburbs, took two friends down to the first floor of an apartment building in an elevator to check the damage caused by the storm. When the three reached the first floor, water rushed into the elevator. Afterwards, Tony said in an interview that the water level went from ankle to knee and then reached his stomach, which was like a movie.

A video shot by Tony's friend shows the water finally reaching the neck and the three are almost submerged. One of them called the emergency department for help. Tony's roommate also came to the first floor to help, but the water outside the elevator reached his neck. Finally, before the rescue workers arrived at the scene, the trapped three people successfully opened the elevator door, the whole process lasted about 10 minutes.
