It happened in China: there was a fire downstairs, 8 people took the elevator downstairs to move the car, 6 died and 1 was injured.

At 19:11 on September 16, 2022, a fire accident occurred in the south entrance hall of the Commercial Office Complex Building, No. 8 Shuimanqiao Road, Quanshan District, Xuzhou City, causing 6 deaths and 1 injury.

Accident roughly through:

A fire broke out at 19:11 that day and spread to the south foyer at 19:16. Deng Haiyan, head of the 7th floor martial arts school, found a fire. He shouted "fire" and took the south elevator to go downstairs. Chen Hao, coach of the martial arts school, and the parents of six taekwondo students followed Deng Haiyan and took the two elevators on the north and south sides to move the electric car. Deng Haiyan did not stop it.

After the elevator door on the first floor was opened, Deng Haiyan found that the corridor was full of black smoke and felt dyspnea. Deng Haiyan closed the elevator door and pressed the button to go to other floors, but the elevator did not move. Deng Haiyan forcibly separated the elevator door with both hands and escaped on his own. Chen Hao and five students' parents were unfortunately killed and one student's parent was seriously burned.

So why did the elevator not move? This is also analyzed in the accident report:

Deng Haiyan closed the elevator door and pressed the button to go to other floors, but the elevator did not move. The several possibilities analyzed in the report are based on the last case: the case where the elevators are all burned out. Since the report does not mention whether the elevator uses a mechanical touch panel or a light curtain, most elevators now use a light curtain. The following analysis is based on the light curtain: I personally think that the biggest possibility that the elevator can not run should be the light curtain, because the smoke on the light curtain caused the elevator can not close. The credibility of Deng Haiyan's statement is questionable: when the elevator door opens and sees thick black smoke, the innate reaction is to run away quickly and it is unlikely to return to the elevator. A similar situation occurred in the United States, where two policemen were killed and one injured.

In fact, the operation of the elevator in the event of a fire is inherently unreliable.

What is the direct cause of the accident?

There would certainly not have been a tragedy of 6 dead and 1 injured without a fire. For this accident, if everyone (safety awareness) does not take the elevator or the elevator (technical means) can automatically exit the service, can such heavy casualties be avoided? Then the fire will cause property losses at most, and there will be no casualties.

The lessons of accidents are valuable resources, and it is more meaningful to educate the public, especially now that there are many high-rise buildings: how to let more people know that using elevators (including escape) is dangerous in case of fire is a very meaningful thing.
